What is chiropractic?

In Humans the spinal column is made up of 24 moveable vertebrae, plus the sacrum and the coccyx. It houses the spinal cord through which nerve information is transmitted from the brain to the rest of the body. When the spinal column is correctly aligned, nerve information is passed accurately.

However, if any part of the spine becomes misaligned, then nerve function may become impaired. A misalignment of the joints can occur for many reasons; some of the most common are incorrect lifting, car or sporting accidents, falls, stress and poor posture. This can lead to pain, discomfort (such as numbness or pins and needles), or restricted mobility.

Chiropractic treatment consists of manipulative techniques known as adjustments to restore corrrect function and mobility and balance to the joints. Numerous methods of adjustment have evolved over the years and one of them is the McTimoney method. The McTimoney method comprises a variety of low-force techniques; the key to the success of adjustments is the speed, dexterity and accuracy with which they are performed.

Chiropractors provide care for patients of all ages, who present with a range of acute and chronic conditions and can advise about self-help, exercise and lifestyle.

Your first visit

On your first visit you will be asked about your general medical history in order to provide the best possible care tailored to your circumstances.

History and examination This will include questions about your medical history including any injuries. If you have any recent x-ray or MRI reports it would be helpful if you could bring these with you. You will be given a working diagnosis of your condition, probable cause and the treatment that is recommended for you.

Same day treatment Once the examination is complete, patients will generally have their first treatment during the same visit unless further medical information is needed; whereas the treatment would be put off for a more suitable time. If, following examination I feel that your condition is not one which will benefit from Chiropractic treatment I will advise you of this and you will only be charged for the assessment.

Home instructions You will be given advice about ways in which you can help your recovery between treatment. This may include eg the appropriate applications of ice or heat; postural advice; avoidance of certain activities; or home exercises.

Subsequent appointments A course of treatment will be recommended depending on the severity of your condition. Most patients attend on a weekly basis at first with appointments becoming more widely spaced as their condition improves.
